Feedback from an Adult Student on Listening Skills

This lady has a challenging high level job. Her issue is that she found it very difficult to take in verbal instructions. Any elaborate multiple type instuctions meant that she was unable to take in the details, remember them and carry them out effectively. She needed to write down the instructions and often missed key elements to carry out the tasks. It was embarrassing for her and definitely did not reflect her potential as a capable and intelligent person. Only one month into the course she is already reporting significant gains in her ability to process information.

"What has improved for me: In conversations, I seem to be less anxious to understand and more relaxed and focussed on what is being said. Before I would probably pick out a few words combined with gestures and then be focussed on constructing a meaning. Whereas now my attention goes more to listening to what is being said, making sure I have heard it all. I wouldn't say there aren't times where some sounds just don't seem to fit any words, but I seem to be allowing myself more time to take in and process, where before I would be anxious to understand and miss most of what's being said."

We will continue to work with her to develop her memory, concentration and speed of processing to build on the listening accuracy gains that she is making. This will involve her doing higher level auditory processing work and more complex reading comprehension.
